How it works

Form: noun + + noun. Or plain-form verb/adjective + + a particle like / / .

Meaning: links two nouns as X's Y / X of Y / X-type Y, OR turns a whole verb clause into a noun so it can take a particle.

Key uses:
- Possessive: my book, Yamada's car.
- Attribute / category: Japanese food, English-language book, wooden table. The first noun describes the second.
- Nominalizer (turning a clause into a noun): running is fun, I saw him come (literally saw the fact of him coming).

vs. (both nominalize): for concrete, sensory events — used with / / / see / hear / wait for / feel. for abstract things — used with / / / talk about / teach / think / decide. I like watching movies (concrete); cooking is important (abstract).

Casual sentence-ender: what happened? — softens a question. Common in speech, especially with children or intimates.

Examples

Furigana is above every kanji; the pattern is already filled in.

これは私わたしの本ほんです。

This is my book. (possessive)

日に本ほん語ごの先せん生せいです。

He is a Japanese-language teacher. (attribute)

彼かれが走はしるのを見みました。

I saw him running. (nominalizer for a perception verb)

Now try it
